Accessibility
Our aim in designing this web site was to make the content accessible to people with disabilities, or who access the Internet with devices other than typical graphical web browsers. All of the pages on this site are Bobby Approved, and
- meet at least Conformance Level A of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium
- comply with the requirements of Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act.
Accessibility is closely related to matters of compatibility.
If you would find it more comfortable viewing the site with larger text, most browsers provide the ability to change text size. In recent versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, for example, on the “View” menu on the toolbar, you will find a “Text Size” option that allows you to make the text larger or smaller. Older versions of Netscape have “Increase font” and “Decrease font” options on the “View” menu. In Opera, you can change the magnification of the page with the “Zoom” control at the right-hand end of the address box. (Normally it is set to 100%.)

Compatible with any browser
We have designed this web site so that it may be read in any web browser, and is accessible to users of other Internet-enabled devices, including assistive technologies such as screen readers. Being accessible does not mean that everyone “sees” the site in exactly the same way. Accessibility is principally about making content available to site visitors regardless of the kind of browser or other device they are using. To achieve this, we separate content from presentation using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). The site is best experienced using an up-to-date browser that supports CSS well, but you will not miss any of the site content if you are using an older browser. You can find out why and how to upgrade to an up-to-date browser at the Web Standards Project.
We have two further comments regarding enhancement of your view of this web site:
- The key fonts we use on this site are Georgia and Verdana, respectively a serif and a sans serif font designed specifically for viewing on the web. If your browser supports CSS and you have these fonts installed on your system, they will be used to display text. If not, your browser will substitute another font. Microsoft formerly allowed you to download Georgia and Verdana for free from its web site, but no longer does so. However, most Microsoft applications for both PC and Mac - including Internet Explorer - are shipped with these fonts included.
- All web sites look better if fonts are smoothed or anti-aliased (the jaggy edges are removed from rounded parts of letters). Later versions of Windows are already equipped for font smoothing; consult your Windows Help file to find out how to turn font smoothing on. If you find that you need the Windows 95 font smoother, you can download it for free from Microsoft. If you are a Mac user, OS8 and higher smooths fonts automatically.

The toolbar

If your web browser is JavaScript-enabled, you will see the toolbar shown above at the foot of most of the pages on this site. If not, you will see only the first two of the icons. The icons have the following functions:
Selecting this icon will return you to the top of the current page.
Selecting this icon will take you to this Site Information page.
If your browser supports this function, selecting this icon will take you to the “Add Bookmark” or “Add Favourite” dialogue box; otherwise you will be taken to a page explaining how to bookmark pages in common browsers.
If your browser supports this function, selecting this icon will take you to the “Print” dialogue box; otherwise you will be taken to a page explaining how to print pages in common browsers.
Selecting this icon will allow you to send details of the current page to a friend by e-mail.
The last three are not available to you if your browser is not JavaScript-enabled, but this in no way detracts from the essential function or content of this site.
